Travel itinerary | The German Village of Monschau | Hiking at the Eifel National park

A charming little town in Germany, Monschau dates back to the year 1195 in Medieval Germany. It owes its name to the great castle. Castle Monschau was taken over by Emperor Charles V in 1543 and proceeded to sack the entire city. After that, the castle was left in ruins, but has since been remodeled and now serves as a youth hostel.

Where is Monschau Located?

Monschau is located in Germany between the forests of the Eifel mountain range, which is a great point of travel across the Netherlands. You can easily get to the “Common Point of three borders” from here, and it is only 2km away from Belgium.

There are several ways to get to Monschau. Let’s go over the different transportation options:

By Train:

There is, unfortunately, no train station in Monschau.

By Bus:

From the main station of Aachen, the express bus SB 63 leaves every hour. It takes about 70 minutes to get there and only costs €5,40.

From Cologne, the bus departs from the central station. The takes about 2 hours and costs €17,50. Visit the AVV page to schedule your bus trip!

From Cologne, it is approximately 109 km to Monschau, and it takes an hour and a half to drive there. German highways are excellent and the signs are very clear and easy to read.

What are the Typical Dishes in Monschau?

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Let’s talk about food! There are several options for great and unique food options during your stay. Here are several things to look forward to:

Potatoes! Germans love potatoes. In puree, as a salad, or just baked. You will often find them as a side dish with a main course of Schnitzel or sausage.

Rosti: Rosti is a Monschau specialty. It is similar to a small tortilla made of grated potatoes. It is then fried. It actually comes from Switzerland.

Pillekuchen: It might sound funny, but it tastes great. It’s a potato pancake made from eggs and onions and served with chicory.

Rye bread: This is the typical bread of the region made of rye flour, it is very healthy and does not contain any wheat. Enjoy it with some slices of ham or cheese.

Sweet rolls: For something on the sweeter side, try a sweet roll made with raisin, nuts, or candied orange peels.

Apple strudel: Another popular favorite, this German dessert is available in almost all cafes. Try it with whipped cream and coffee – you won’t be disappointed!

My personal favorite dinner dish in this region is Schnitzel with potatoes on the side. Plus, if you’re a fan of beer, you’ll find the best German beer in the whole world!

  1. Lovely read Angela. I’m very intrigued with this village and it looks like the perfect day trip as well. The food almost reminds me of when I travelled around Austria, an example is the Apple Strudel. I would definitely love to visit this place during Christmas.
